english language proficiency test (elpt)
The UWI faculties have approved pre-requisite qualifications in English Language (See Below) to assess students’ fundamental written competencies (basic grammar, spelling, punctuation and essay writing skills.
In the absence of this, a student must write and pass the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). The purpose of the ELPT, is to determine whether students have attained the level of proficiency in written English, required for entry into the Level I English Language courses (in Department of Management Studies, this course is usually FOUN 1001 – English for Academic Purposes).
STUDENTS WITH ANY THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS ARE EXEMPTED FROM THE ELPT:
The ELPT is held three times during the academic year in August, October and February for students intending to read English Language Foundation courses.

MATHEMATICS proficiency test (Mpt)
Students admitted into the Faculty of Social Sciences who possess a Passing Grade in GCE/ CSEC Additional Mathematics or GCE Advanced Level Mathematics / CAPE Mathematics (Unit 1 and 2), can be exempted from reading ECON 1003-Mathematics for Economics I. Such students will be required to read another 3-credit, level I course from any discipline on campus, to complete their level I credits requirements.
Students who Do Not possess a Passing Grade in GCE/ CSEC Additional Mathematics or GCE Advanced Level Mathematics / CAPE Mathematics (Unit 1 and 2), have the option to write a Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) (usually the second week of semester 1).
